How Do We Control Lab Quality Inside the IVF Clinic?

The labs that make babies are inside what’s called a "cleanroom" where air is filtered to remove particles and pollutants. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters capture even the most microscopic particles, and monitoring systems make sure harmful chemicals, called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), do not enter the laboratory. This cleanly managed facility prevents contamination and keeps the embryos safe.
Air Pressure and Monitoring
The air pressure in an IVF facility is a bit higher than that of surrounding rooms. This forces contaminants out whenever the doors are opened, maintaining a clean environment. Gas Supply for Incubators
Fertilized embryos are placed in incubators that mimic the natural environment inside a woman’s body. Such incubators use a precise mixture of gases, including low oxygen levels, to support optimal embryo growth. The gas levels are continuously monitored, and backups warn staff if something fails.
Real-Time Monitoring
Perhaps the greatest development in IVF is real-time monitoring (RTM). These systems monitor key parameters such as temperature, humidity, and gas levels all day. Anything out of range is immediately picked up by staff so they can correct the problem before it reaches the embryos. Caring for Embryos: Culture Systems and Media
After eggs are fertilized, they must be put in the right environments to develop. Culture media, or nutrient-rich liquids, offer all the nutrition that embryos require to develop. The pH of the culture media is also carefully monitored because even minor acidity shifts can harm embryos. Many laboratories also coat culture dishes with oil overlays to shield embryos from evaporation and sudden temperature swings.
