Lab Technician

Director of Operations and Nursing Services
Role Summary
The Lab Technician is responsible for performing blood sample collection, processing the samples using the lab machine, ensuring proper patient ID and labeling documentation, determining appropriate blood drawing method, maintaining accurate records, organizing documents, receiving training in Andrology, maintaining a clean work station, following infection control standards, and fulfilling assigned duties.
Lab technicians are expected to be courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients and dealing with them.
Role Responsibilities
Collect blood samples from patients
Process the sample using a Laboratory machine as dictated by the guidelines
Practice proper patient identification, labeling vials properly
Determine the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient
Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
Collect and organize information and documents as required
Receive training and perform Andrology tasks (Semen analysis, sperm wash, etc.)
Keep the phlebotomy cart and station well-organized at all times
Practice infection control standards while working with patients and equipment at all times
Other duties, as assigned
Qualifications
Formal Education or Equivalent:
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent
Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification is an asset
Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in good standing
Experience:
Minimum of one year of Laboratory experience specific to phlebotomy techniques

Specialized Skills, Knowledge, or Certifications Unique to This Role:
Experience with effective puncture techniques
Understanding of proper patient identification methods
Knowledge of legal requirements about drawing blood, handling fluid samples, and use of relevant medical equipment and materials
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work safely and accurately, follow directives from assigned Clinic Manager, and complete assigned tasks promptly
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or independently, as required
Experience with a chemistry analyzer is an asset
