The Basics
At Care Fertility Centre, we diagnose and investigate the causes of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) for patients in Canada. Recurrent pregnancy loss, also known as recurrent miscarriage, is defined as experiencing two or more consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks of gestation. We also support patients with a history of two or more consecutive first-trimester losses or any loss after 15 weeks.
Our compassionate team understands the emotional and physical toll of pregnancy loss. Since 2004, we have provided personalized care to help thousands of patients achieve a successful fertility journey. Contact us today to learn more about how we can support you.
Recurrent Miscarriage Causes
Genetic Factors: Over half of first-trimester pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo. In some cases, these genetic issues may recur, leading to multiple pregnancy losses.
Uterine Anomalies: Structural problems in the uterus, such as congenital abnormalities, polyps, or intrauterine scarring, can interfere with pregnancy.
Endocrine Issues: Conditions affecting hormone levels, including diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and diseases of the thyroid or pituitary glands, can contribute to pregnancy complications.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to harmful substances, such as drugs, chemicals, excessive alcohol, or caffeine, may increase the risk of miscarriage.
Understanding these factors helps tailor treatments and interventions to support a successful pregnancy.
Diagnosis of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
We conduct diagnostic testing to identify the causes of recurrent pregnancy loss. The most common procedures include:
Karyotype Analysis: This involves analyzing blood samples from both parents to assess chromosome abnormalities.
Blood Tests: We evaluate levels of progesterone, thyroid hormones, and other proteins that may impact pregnancy success.
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): A dye is injected into the uterus to examine the reproductive organs for any abnormalities.
Ultrasound: This imaging technique helps detect polyps, uterine growths, or fibroids that may affect pregnancy.
What to Expect
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Treatment
Recurrent pregnancy loss treatment is determined by the cause of frequent pregnancy loss. If tests don’t show any abnormalities, the chances for a successful pregnancy are over 70 percent. Couples are referred for genetic counselling to determine the likelihood of a normal pregnancy if a chromosomal or genetic abnormality is found.
Many patients have surgery to repair the defect if a uterine abnormality is found. Medications can often be described for blood clot disorders and endocrine issues. If lifestyle changes, surgery, and medication cannot treat the cause of pregnancy loss, many couples have successful pregnancies with fertility treatment options. We will work with you to determine the best treatment for your needs.
