How Does Ovulation Induction Work?

Ovulation induction is a common solution for addressing fertility issues. At Care Fertility Centre, your doctor will use medication to stimulate ovulation, rather than relying on your body's natural cycle. Typically, ovulation occurs once a month, releasing one egg, but some women experience irregular or absent ovulation. Ovulation induction helps regulate this process, increasing your chances of conception either naturally or through fertility treatments like in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

When to Choose Ovulation Induction Over Other Treatments

Fortunately, ovulation induction is a viable treatment option for many of our patients at the Care Fertility Centre. In general, we recommend this treatment to women with unexplained fertility issues or those who aren’t ovulating normally. Women with hormonal problems or polycystic ovary syndrome might also find success with ovulation induction. Couples with no male factor infertility are also often recommended ovulation induction. At our fertility clinic, we welcome all women and couples who are looking for answers when it comes to fertility problems.

Types of Medication for Ovulation Induction

There isn’t a single medication used for ovulation induction. At Care Fertility Centre, our team will assess your medical history and other factors to recommend the most suitable option. Often referred to as “fertility drugs,” these medications work to stimulate the ovaries to release one or more mature eggs during each ovulation cycle, boosting your chances of pregnancy. Common medications include:

  • Oral medications like Clomid and Letrozole, which stimulate the production of multiple eggs.

  • Injectable medications containing Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) or Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which are effective for patients who haven't responded to oral medications.

Be Aware of Ovulation Induction’s Side Effects

As with any other medication or procedure, there are several side effects you should be aware of. The medications associated with ovulation induction can result in mild or severe symptoms that go away within a few weeks. Common symptoms include bloating, headaches, hot flashes, and weight gain. Sometimes patients also experience nausea, shortness of breath, blurry vision, and pain in the pelvic region as well. If these symptoms are severe or continue for more than a few weeks, please get in touch with the Care Fertility Centre for professional attention.

Optimistic Success Rates for Ovulation Induction

Because each patient is unique, it’s difficult to say just how effective ovulation induction will be on a case-by-case basis. To ensure success, the team at Care Fertility Centre closely monitors every patient with bloodwork and ultrasounds for the duration of treatment. We’ll also discuss any additional fertility techniques that might be used in combination with ovulation induction, such as intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization. In general, we can say ovulation induction increases your chances of pregnancy from 2-10% each month to up to 20%. While this doesn’t quite equal normal fertility rates, this medication does get you much closer to conception.

Ovulation Medications

There are various oral and injectable medications used to stimulate the ovaries and assist with ovulation or to produce multiple eggs during a fertility cycle.
These ovulation induction medications, often referred to as “fertility drugs,” work by stimulating the ovaries to release one or more mature eggs, thereby increasing the chances of pregnancy.
Each medication operates differently and may be used alone or in combination, depending on your specific needs. The choice of medication will be guided by your menstrual history and the fertility plan developed by our experts.

Types Of Medications

  • Oral medications such as Clomid and Letrozole will either induce egg production in patients who are not ovulating or in some cases induce multiple egg production when it is desirable to do so.

  • Injectable medications that contain Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH)—which are hormones that stimulate follicle production in the ovaries – may be used to induce ovulation in patients who:

    • Are resistant or unresponsive to oral medication

    • Who have attempted oral medications without success

    • Require extra egg production.
