CARE Fertility Welcomes Ontario’s New Fertility Treatment Tax Credit – Improving Access and Affordability for Patients
The Government of Ontario has announced the introduction of a new refundable Fertility Treatment Tax Credit as part of the 2025 provincial budget. This credit will reimburse 25% of eligible fertility-related expenses, up to $20,000 annually, providing a maximum benefit of $5,000 per year.
Eligible expenses include:
Assisted reproductive procedures such as IVF, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer
Egg and embryo freezing, including associated storage costs
Fertility medications
Travel costs related to fertility treatment
Diagnostic testing for infertility
Key information:
Applies to expenses incurred on or after January 1, 2025
Treatments must take place within Canada
Can be claimed in addition to existing provincial and federal medical expense tax credits
A comprehensive review is scheduled after five years
The credit is expected to deliver $160 million in financial relief over three years
In addition, Ontario is significantly increasing funding to the Ontario Fertility Program:
$50 million for 2025–2026
$100 million for 2026–2027
An additional $100 million for 2027–2028
